How to Wash a Tie Dye Shirt

For regular washing, follow these simple steps:

• Turn your tie dye clothing inside out before washing.
• Wash in cold water.
• Use a mild or color-safe laundry detergent.
• Wash with similar colors.
• Avoid chlorine bleach.
• Air dry when practical or machine dry using low heat.

Cold water and gentle washing help protect both the dyes and cotton fibers. Turning a shirt inside out also reduces friction against the dyed outer surface during the wash cycle.

Washing a New Tie Dye Shirt

There is an important difference between washing a professionally finished tie dye shirt and washing a garment you have just dyed yourself.

Professionally Finished Tie Dye Clothing

A professionally dyed and finished garment should already have gone through the necessary rinsing and washing process before you receive it. You do not need to rinse a new Tie Dyed Shop shirt repeatedly before wearing it.

For extra caution, you can wash new tie dye clothing separately or with similar colors for the first few washes.

A Shirt You Have Just Tie Dyed Yourself

Freshly dyed clothing requires additional care because excess dye may remain in the fabric.

After the dye has had sufficient time to set:

1. Rinse the garment until most excess dye has been removed.
2. Wash it separately from other clothing.
3. Use cold or cool water and detergent.
4. Continue washing separately until you are confident excess dye is no longer being released.

What Is the Best Water Temperature for Tie Dye?

We recommend cold water for routine washing.

Hot water can be harder on both fabric and color over repeated washings. Cold water provides effective everyday cleaning while helping preserve the appearance of colorful clothing.

Cold-water washing also reduces the likelihood of shrinkage in 100% cotton garments.

What Detergent Should You Use for Tie Dye?

A mild, color-safe laundry detergent is a good choice for tie dye clothing.

You generally do not need a special "tie dye detergent" for routine care. The important things are to use a quality detergent, avoid excessive detergent, and stay away from products containing chlorine bleach.

When in doubt, check the detergent label to make sure it is appropriate for colored clothing.

Can You Wash Tie Dye With Other Clothes?

Yes. Once a professionally finished tie dye garment has been washed several times without noticeable color transfer, it can generally be washed with similar-colored clothing.

With a new garment, however, we recommend being cautious during the first few washes. Washing separately or with similar dark or brightly colored clothing reduces the risk of color transfer.

Freshly home-dyed garments should be washed separately until excess dye has been thoroughly removed.

Does Tie Dye Bleed When Washed?

Properly dyed and finished tie dye clothing should not continuously release large amounts of dye during normal washing.

A small amount of residual color during early washes can occur, particularly with intensely colored garments. This is different from a freshly dyed DIY shirt, which may contain substantial excess dye that must be rinsed away.

How well a tie dye garment retains its appearance depends on several factors, including the fabric, dyes, dyeing process, initial rinsing and washing, and how the garment is cared for afterward.

How to Dry Tie Dye Clothing

Air drying is the gentlest option and can help minimize wear and shrinkage.

If you prefer to use a clothes dryer, use a low-heat or gentle setting. High heat is unnecessary and can contribute to shrinkage and fabric wear over time.

This is particularly important with 100% cotton tie dye shirts. Cotton is an excellent fabric for tie dye because it accepts dye well, but cotton garments can shrink when repeatedly exposed to high dryer temperatures.

How to Keep Tie Dye From Fading

All clothing eventually shows some effects of washing and wear, but good care can help tie dye remain vibrant much longer.

To help preserve your tie dye colors:

• Wash in cold water.
• Turn the garment inside out.
• Use a mild, color-safe detergent.
• Avoid chlorine bleach.
• Avoid unnecessarily harsh wash cycles.
• Air dry or use low dryer heat.
• Do not leave clothing sitting wet in the washing machine for extended periods.
• Follow any care instructions provided with the garment.

Can You Use Bleach on Tie Dye?

We generally recommend avoiding chlorine bleach on colored tie dye clothing.

Bleach can remove or alter dye, producing permanent light spots and changing the original pattern. Even a small splash can affect a brightly dyed garment.

If stain treatment is necessary, use a product specifically labeled as safe for colored fabrics and follow the product instructions carefully.

Will a Tie Dye Shirt Shrink?

Tie dye itself does not cause a shirt to shrink. The underlying fabric and how you wash and dry it determine the potential for shrinkage.

Many traditional tie dye shirts are made from cotton because cotton accepts dye extremely well. Like other cotton clothing, however, they may shrink when exposed to high temperatures.

Washing in cold water and using low dryer heat or air drying helps minimize additional shrinkage.

Why is my tie dye fading?
